South Bend receives federal grant to bring Amtrak to Union Station
ABC 57 SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- According to the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Railroad Administration, South Bend will receive up to $3.848 million in federal grant money to bring Amtrak to downtown's Union Station.
Officials say the proposed project was selected for Project Planning and Project Development and includes the relocation of the city's Amtrak station and associated track along with related infrastructure owned by Norfolk Southern and Canadian National Railway.
South Bend will contribute a 20 percent non-federal match.
Officials say this project will increase the ability to meet anticipated demand, improve integration with other modes, and restore competitiveness to intercity passenger rail.
The future station is also expected to enable reduced trip times, increased ridership, and better connections to transit routes.
Official documents also state the project qualifies for the statutory set-aside for long-distance passenger rail routes and services, including Amtrak's Floridian and Lake Shore Limited routes.
South Bend is one of many projects selected across the country. You can learn more about the projects on the USDOT website.
