Semi crash and chemical spill closes lanes on Toll Road

LAGRANGE COUNTY, Ind. – The Indiana State Police is investigating a single semi-tractor trailer crash on the I-80/90 Toll Road that caused a chemical spill and left one person dead, officials said.

The crash, which happened at the 129.5mm near Howe, has closed both the eastbound and westbound lanes at the 129.5mm, located eight miles east of S.R. 9.

All traffic is currently being diverted off the Toll Road at two locations:

  • Eastbound traffic is being diverted at the 121mm exit (S.R. 9)
  • Westbound traffic is being diverted at the 144mm exit (I-69)

The crash also resulted in a chemical spill, requiring an evacuation of the immediate area which has since ceased.

Indiana State Police confirmed that the driver of the semi-tractor trailer has died, but their identity has not yet been released.

Crews estimate the cleanup and continued road closure will last for four to six hours.
