Shots fired Monday night at Niles apartment complex results in two arrests

NILES, Mich. -- In the late evening hours of Memorial Day, members of the Berrien County Sheriff's Officer responded to a report of shots fired at the Berrien Woods apartment complex in Niles.
When they arrived on the location at near 910 Woods Edge Dr. around 11:18 p.m., deputies found "a disturbance outside involving several subjects," the report stated.
"The deputy approached the subjects and witnessed a male carrying a pistol. The subjects all fled on foot away from the deputy as he gave chase. The deputy chased the man with a gun along with several other subjects and they entered an apartment."
No one inside the apartment was willing to come out or speak with police and additional units were called to the scene.
"Police had the neighboring apartments evacuated, treating the scene as a barricaded gunman," the BCSO said.
"Later, two adult males, one adult female, and one juvenile female exited the apartment to surrender to police."
Authorities say a search warrant on the apartment turned up firearms and fired shell casings which were seized.
As a result of this investigation a 24-year-old male of Niles and a 21-year-old male of Dowagiac were arrested and lodged at BCSO Jail for firearms related felony criminal charges.
As is customary in Michigan, the names of the accused will be released after their arraignment.
There were no reports of injury related to the incident or the investigation.
