Single vehicle crash on I-80/94 ramp results in fatality
LAKE COUNTY, Ind.—A single vehicle crash in Hammond on Sunday resulted in the death of the vehicle’s driver.
At 11:29 p.m. on Sunday, Trooper William Stancy responded to a single vehicle crash on the ramp leading from I-80/94 west bound to Cline Ave. south bound.
According to police reports, a preliminary investigation shows that a 2004 Ford Taurus was exiting off of west bound I-80/94 onto south bound Cline Ave. when the car ran off of the road, just before the curve on the ramp.
The car then struck the concrete barrier wall before traveling against the barrier wall and striking a blue lodging informational sign with the right side of the car.
The car came to a stop against the concrete bridge support pillar after hitting it head on.
Two other motorists and a Griffith police officer tried to assist the driver but could not get the driver out of the car because the damage to the front of the car had pinned the driver inside.
Hammond Fire and EMS arrived and used the Jaws of Life and other extrication tools to remove the driver from the car.
The driver, 39-year-old GW McNeil Junior of Merrillville, was pronounced dead at the scene.
At the time of the crash, the driver was wearing a seat belt.
According to police, alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.
