Smart Streets project expected to affect traffic a little longer

If your daily drive takes you down St Joseph Street in South Bend, expect your trip to take a little more time for a while.

The final portion of the Smart Streets project was set to be finished next week when St. Joseph was set to reopen as a two way street.

The contractor asked for more time to make curbs and sidewalks.

"What we don't want to have happen is to say that we're done this year, and come back in the spring and have lanes closed again in order to do the sidewalk work. So the contractor said they need more time to get all of that done," Mayor Pete Buttigieg says.

Expect delays until Thanksgiving.

After that Mayor Buttigieg says the work that's left won't affect traffic.
