Smoke alarm alerts man to house fire

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Firefighters say that a smoke detector saved a sleeping man's life.

The fire sparked Thursday at around 4 p.m. on Hastings and 28th Street in South Bend.

The battalion chief said the fire could have been much worse.

The homeowner had been asleep but the smoke alarm woke him up.

Fire officials say remember to check your smoke detector and make sure it is working properly.
