Some cab companies offering free rides for New Year's
If you choose to go out and celebrate on New Year's Eve, don't drink and drive - call a cab. Several companies are offering free rides after midnight.
At Express Cab, they expect to have 60 drivers on the road New Year's Eve.
They say they have been preparing their cars and drivers for the snowy weather.
"We pre-check all our vehicles especially when we're expecting a snow storm. Make sure everything's fine with heat and tires and brakes," said Jennifer Jacquez, manager at Express Cab.
Mechanics worked through the morning getting their taxis ready for their busiest night of the year.
Express Cab in South Bend and Elkhart hires retired truck drivers because of their experience driving in snow.
"If they can handle a big semi-truck in this stuff then a taxi cab should be a piece of cake," said Jacquez.
Taxi drivers not only have to handle the icy roads, but deal with highly intoxicated passengers.
"If the dispatchers feel that they are that intoxicated we send a more masculine male to get them home safety where they could carry them into the house or at least assist them into their house and into safety," said Jacquez.
The phone was ringing off the hook at Express Cab about their special New Years Eve promotion.
If your bartender calls Express Cab from 12 a.m. to 3 a.m., they will take you home for free.
By taking tipsy passengers home, they hope to keep drunk drivers off the roads.
"The community always gives to us so it's just our way of giving back," said Jacquez.
ABC Cab and Ace Cab companies are also offering the free ride promotion.
