SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Police said a helmet saved the life of a bike rider who was hit by a van on Tuesday morning in South Bend.
The accident happened around 8 a.m. at the corner of Hill and Colfax.
Police said the van was turning into St. Joseph grade school, and hit with a bike.
The cyclist was taken to the hospital, but he is expected to be okay.
"This is a prime example of why you should wear a bike helmet. It won't always prevent injuries or save lives, but it will increase your odds greatly," said Sgt. Bill Kraus of the South Bend Police Department.
The driver of the van said he didn't see the biker.
Police said another driver actually waved for the van to go.
