South Bend community activists calling for superintendent’s dismissal

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Members of the local Black Lives Matter chapter, the NAACP, and other activists stood outside South Bend Community School Corporation headquarters to demand new leadership on Monday.

The activists are seeking the termination or resignation of current superintendent Todd Cummings.

Teacher retention, diversity and inclusion, and the maintenance of South Bend school facilities are some of the reasons why Cummings’ position is in question.

Demonstrators were especially critical of a proposal to close down Clay High School, which could leave it available for a private charter school to purchase for $1 under Indiana law.

Activists also say that the school corporation wouldn’t be losing so many students if there was a clear path for education.

The South Bend Community School Corporation Board of Trustees will meet on Wednesday.
