Twenty-eight nominees were honored at the ceremony, which was held in-person for the first time since 2019.

Nominees were chosen by peers in their respective schools. Of the 28, a group of ten were chosen as an “honors group” by a panel of retired and current teachers.

Avery and the runner-up were chosen from the honors group.

The runner-up Teacher of the Year is Pamela Hirschler, a fourth-grade teacher at Swanson Traditional School.

As the SBCSC Teacher of the Year, Avery will receive a $2,500 Professional Growth Grant from the South Bend Education Foundation.

She will also represent the school corporation as a 2021-22 Indiana Teacher of the Year candidate.
