SOUTH BEND, Ind.—South Bend Cubs player Jonathan Sierra will represent the team during Monday’s Home Run Derby.
The right fielder will participate in the Derby alongside of seven other players from teams in the Midwest League.
Sierra, a native of the Dominican Republic who signed with the South Bend Cubs in 2015, has hit two home runs this season. One of his home runs even hit off of the 1st Source Bank Performance Center at Four Winds Field.
“I’m so excited, man, because the South Bend Cubs gave me the opportunity. So I want to compete for my family, for opportunities,” Sierra said.
This is Sierra’s first time participating in the All-Star Game’s Home Run Derby.
Each round of the Derby will last for three minutes. The player with the most home runs during each head-to-head match-up within the bracket will advance to the next round.
The final round will feature one player from the eastern division and one from the western division.
The winner of the Home Run Derby will receive a $1,000 check. The runner-up will earn a $500 check.
“It’s my field and I’m feeling so comfortable,” Sierra said. “I want to win that check.”
