SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The South Bend Fire Department reports police were initially called before noon Tuesday for a welfare check for a potential dispute near Colfax Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard

The report states officers arrived to find a man in the water close to the pier underneath the Colfax Bridge.

SPFD crews were then called to the scene.

Once on scene, one of the department's water personnel entered the water and helped the man to shore.

The man was checked out by medics on scene and taken to the hospital for further evaluation.
