South Bend man accused of shooting and killing brother

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - A South Bend man was charged with reckless homicide for his role in the shooting death of his brother, according to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office.

Forty-six-year-old Michael Kotowski was shot and killed just after midnight on Saturday near his home in the 1700 block of East Bowman Street in South Bend.

According to the probable cause affidavit, 48-year-old Steven Kotowski went into Michael's house immediately after it happened and admitted to shooting his brother.

A witness who was with the brothers the night of the shooting said he and Michael were in Michael's garage working on cars, eating and drinking alcohol when Steven arrived with more alcohol around 8 p.m.

The witness said the relationship between the brothers was good, but that Steven got "out of control" when drinking, reports said.

As the men hung out, Steven reportedly handed the witness his gun and told him to shoot it.

When he refused, Michael told the witness to give the gun back to Steven to put it away.

Because of Steven's behavior, the witness left Michael's home just after midnight.

A second witness told police he was outside his own home letting his dog out when he heard two voices arguing from the direction of Michael's garage.

At some point, the witness recalled hearing someone ask, "you going to get your weapon now?" followed by gunshots a few seconds later.

The witness got his own gun and went back outside, where he saw a bald man and a second man with hair outside Michael's garage.

The bald man was on top of the man with hair, slapping him as if to wake him up, the witness said.

The witness then saw the bald man go inside the residence and heard him say, "I shot him," according to reports.

He did not see anyone else besides the two men at the time shots were fired.

Police confirmed Steven is bald and Michael had hair.

The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office filed one criminal count of reckless homicide against Steven Kotowski.

Kotowski is being held in the St. Joseph County Jail and is schedule for a bond hearing on Monday, July 17.
