South Bend man pleads guilty in carjacking that left woman with gunshot wound

MISHAWAKA, Ind. - 37-year-old South Bend resident, Julio Enrique Melendez, was sentenced after he pled guilty to both charges related to a carjacking that left one woman wounded from a gunshot in May of 2023.

Documents state Melendez has been convicted of auto theft, a level six felony, and operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a class C misdemeanor, after reaching plea agreements for both charges.

Melendez was sentenced to two years for auto theft and 60 days for operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Court documents state the sentences were suspended and will be served concurrently.

Melendez has been placed on probation for 12 months along with a 90-day driver's license suspension, according to documents obtained.
