South Bend, Mishawaka rename streets in honor of 125 years of Irish football

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- This year marks the 125th year for Notre Dame football and on Monday, the cities of South Bend and Mishawaka joined in on the celebration.

Mayor Pete Buttigieg renamed Michigan Street Monday morning to Fighting Irish Drive.

That is just one of many anniversary events planned leading up to this weekend's Michigan game.

Mayor Buttigieg says it is a great way to show off the community.

"I think the university and the city really depend on each other in so many ways," Buttigieg said. "We rely on the university as a neighbor and the university relies on South Bend as a home."

The city of Mishawaka also honored Notre Dame football on Monday.

Mayor Dave Wood renamed Douglas and Main to Fighting Irish Drive too.

It is the first time both cities ever coordinated a street name change.

The new signs will be up through the weekend.

The visitors bureau is also putting up special banners for the Notre Dame football anniversary.
