South Bend Police Department show reduced gun crimes in 2026

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The new numbers from the South Bend Police Department show progress on reducing gun crimes so far this year.
The arrest of Shaun Norton (view previous article for details) on Tuesday stemmed from one of three violent incidents that night. One on Nimtz Parkway, one on North Johnson Street, and the third near the Colfax Avenue bridge.
However, the SBPD report 290 gun violence incidents this year as of the end of June 2026. That number has gone down 6.2 percent from 2025.The number of shooting victims this year and last year are the same at 25.309 guns have been confiscated, which is an 11 percent increase from 2025.
Traffic stops have jumped by 30 percent.
