South Bend Police investigating shots fired report shortly after student gets off bus

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The South Bend Police Department is investigating a shots fired report involving a juvenile on Wednesday. According to police, the juvenile is a student in the South Bend Community School Corporation.

Just after 4 p.m. on Wednesday, officers responded to a shots fired report in the area of Huey and Bulla Streets.

Neighbors told police that a South Bend school bus had dropped off students in the 1500 block of Huey Street shortly before the shots were heard.

Witnesses said they saw a group of juveniles in the area around the time of the incident and that one of them was possibly carrying a firearm.

The investigation led police to arrest a juvenile who was identified as a high schooler in the South Bend school corporation.

Police believe the juvenile got off the school bus shortly before shots were fired.

The juvenile was taken to the Juvenile Justice Center.

No one was injured during the incident and no shots were fired inside or at the school bus, police said.

The South Bend Community School Corporation released the following statement concerning the incident:

"Our district has been working closely with the South Bend Police Department as they investigate the altercation involving SBCSC high school students that occurred this past Wednesday, August 17, near Huey and Bulla Streets. We currently have no indication that weapons were transported on the school bus. However, the investigation is still ongoing.
