South Bend police urging potential witnesses to come forward after Saturday morning's Eddy Street Commons shooting
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Chaos erupting near Eddy Street Commons in the early hours of Saturday morning, as gunfire broke out after midnight.
Three victims suffered gunshot wounds, but all injuries are reportedly non-life threatening.
South Bend police confirmed with ABC57 Monday that all three victims in the shoots are adults.
They are also asking any witnesses who saw the shooting Saturday to come forward and share their experiences with police to help piece this investigation together.
"It had been a shooting that occurred down the street," said Amber Goddard, O'Rourke's Public House general manager.
A pleasant evening on Eddy Street Commons quickly went south after midnight, as gunshots rang early Saturday morning.
The chaos erupted just as O'Rourke's Public House was wrapping things up for the night.
"We are always concerned with things that have been going on in the area lately, however, we do everything we can to ensure that our staff is safe. We do close earlier so we can avoid any type of late-night conflict so a lot of the things that have gone on in this area, we already have had no customers, been closed, and were getting ready to walk out and leave," said Goddard.
According to officials, several hundred people were at Eddy Street Commons around the time the shooting took place.
Three of the victims injured in the shooting are all expected to be ok.
This is the first reported incident involving gunfire on Eddy Street since September of last year.
One Notre Dame student says the rarity of violent crime on Eddy Street doesn't prevent him from returning to the commons.
"I'm hoping and assuming this is a one-off thing, I don't intend on stopping coming to Eddy Street any time soon. I trust campus police, I trust South Bend police, they do a good job, you can't prevent everything," said William Hunter, Notre Dame student.
With Notre Dame football season, and a major concert both a few weeks away, businesses remain very confident in the police presence that patrols nearby.
"Since the last time there was an incident in the area down the street in the opposite direction, they have made sure they're enforcing curfew laws, and I think that's kind of what's helped curb the late-night activity that's been disturbing our people just trying to enjoy Eddy Street Commons. They have had the street closed off on both ends, from our restaurant down to Napoleon Street and they put the barriers up there, there's cop cars parked at both ends, and then there's always police presence up and down Eddy Street so that has helped," said Goddard.
Police are still actively investigating what led up to the shooting and are urging anyone with information to contact them immediately.
They're hopeful that witnesses will come forward, given how many people were close by when the shots were fired.
