South Bend Police warn public of phone scam

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Officers from the South Bend Police Department are warning the public of a phone scam going around claiming to be from Wells Fargo.

Early Wednesday morning, a South Bend Police detective got a text message that read, “Your ATM/debit card has been restricted, please contact us at 1-888-672-5941 to verify your account.”

The detective knew it was a scam because he does not have a Wells Fargo account but he called the number to investigate.

The audio recording on the other end of the line claimed to be Wells Fargo and asked the detective to type in a full 16-digit debit card number, the 3-digit code, his name and date of birth. The recording then says that the information was successful and the card is back in operation.

This is a scam. If you receive a text like this, do not call the number and do not give away personal information before verifying the contact through a legitimate site.
