South Bend’s yard waste season beginning April 1

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The City of South Bend begins its annual yard waste season on April 1 and lasts until November. The weekly pickup includes things such as grass clippings, brush, and leaves for those that rent a waste bin.

The yard waste collection happens on the same day as normal trash pickup.

Residents can rent a 48- or 96-gallon bin for $2 a month for the 2020 season, and can sign up for the program by visiting the city’s website or calling 311.

The guidelines for waste collection are as follows:

  • Must be curbside by 6:00 a.m. on trash day.
  • Must be away from vehicles, containers, mailboxes, trees, or any other obstructions. The bin must also not be under power lines or branches.
  • Must be completely void of trash debris.

In an effort to protect the health and safety of the drivers, extra pickups of yard waste paper bags have been temporarily suspended.

Residents can still request an extra pickup for branches that are bundled together. Branches should be cut to four ft. or shorter, be no more than four in. in diameter, and be bundled securely with twine into manageable loads.

To schedule an extra pickup for branches, residents can visit the city’s website or call 311.
