South Bend Schools works to improve transportation ahead of new school year
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – As students prepare to return to the classroom next week, South Bend Community School Corporation says it is focusing on improving transportation which has been a top concern among families in recent years.
According to a survey taken by families who have left the district, transportation issues were the leading reason.
Now, with new leadership in place, administrators say a top priority is on getting students to school safely and on time.
On the first day of school, 106 corporations and 16 contracted drivers will run 127 consolidated routes.
“It’s all hands on deck just to make sure we’re reaching our goal of getting all students to school that first day,” said interim transportation director Bob Durm.
Like many districts across the country, South Bend has felt the impact from a national bus driver shortage. In response, the district is offering more competitive pay, a $1,000 bonus for returning drivers, and attendance incentives to help keep routes staffed.
A hiring event was held on Monday aimed to fill the six remaining open driver positions. Durm says if it comes down to it, administrators are ready to step in and drive buses themselves.
“The first day is always exciting, seeing everyone’s fresh faces and the excitement of getting those kids to school,” said Durm.
Parents are encouraged to use the “My Bus App” to track bus routes in real time during the school year. Durm also asks families to have patience in the first few weeks as drivers and students adjust to new routes.
The district is still looking to hire bus drivers and paraprofessionals. Applicants will need to have a valid permit and can get more information online.
