South Bend summer lunch program underway

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Kids flocked to Muessel Park Wednesday for the kick off of South Bend school's summer lunch program.

A sack lunch is provided to kids for free.

It includes a fruit, veggies, milk, juice and sometimes a treat like a cookie.

Many kids on the free or reduced lunch program go hungry when school is out and parents do not have the money for extra food.

"During the summertime months parents their budget gets low and they can't afford to buy food a lot of times and that is helpful they can come out and helps parents as well as children," said lunch director Spring Taylor.

Breakfast and lunch are served to kids at several parks and locations throughout South Bend.
