South Bend's new ordinance goes into effect

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- On Friday, a new gender equality measure will go into effect.

Last week, after hours of testimony, The South Bend Common Council voted in favor of the new ordinance.

The law bars discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, housing, education and public accommodations.

Mayor Pete Buttigieg spoke out in favor of this ordinance.

Buttigieg said that it is not acceptable to discriminate against employees for reasons unrelated to their job performance.
