South Haven home destroyed in explosion, two injured

SOUTH HAVEN, Mich. -- Two people were injured when their home exploded Tuesday evening, according to South Haven Area Emergency Services.

SHAES responded just before 6 p.m. to the home in the 70000 block of 2nd Avenue.

A state trooper on 196, approximately 2 miles away, reported hearing the explosion that leveled the home.

Neighbors helped the man and woman inside the home following the explosion. They were taken to the hospital by ambulance then were flown to a Kalamazoo hospital.

The fire was extinguished by firefighters from SHAES, Bangor Community, Columbia Township and Ganges Township departments.

Covert Township ambulances, the South Haven Police Department, Michigan State Police and the Red Cross all responded to the scene and assisted.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation.
