South Shore Line to hold emergency preparedness drill in New Carlisle

ABC 57

NEW CARLISLE, Ind. -- The South Shore Line announced it will host a multi-team emergency preparedness drill on Wednesday between Tulip Road and Smilax Road in New Carlisle.

The drill is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and is expected to last until 8 p.m.

Officials say the federally mandated drill is a key component in South Shore's continuing efforts to familiarize first responders with railroad crisis response procedures.

The drill will cause scheduled train services to reduce speeds while traveling through the area.

Train passengers and the public may see emergency vehicles and personnel in the area of the drill.

Officials say the drill will take place on South Shore's mainline Track 2 that runs between Smilax Road and Tulip Road.

Flaggers will be on site to maintain the safety of all participants and motorists.

The crisis scenario involves an active shooter who causes the collision of a passenger train with a freight train, possibly carrying hazardous material.

Several local police and fire departments will be participating in the exercise.
