Soviet era jet crashes at Iowa air show

DAVENPORT, Iowa -- Tragedy struck an Iowa air show on Saturday after a plane crashed into a field.

Officials say that Glenn Smith of Frisco, TX appeared to lose control of the Soviet Cold War era jet he was flying. Smith was part of a three jet formation doing a complicated maneuver.

Witnesses say they were shocked.

"We saw two of them strip away like they were going to do another maneuver, and the one was headed toward, like, back towards where it came from, and he went nose-down into the ground and burst into flames," one witness said.

Officials say Smith did not have enough time to eject from the plane.

The show resumed later Saturday afternoon.
