Special Election Day in Jefferson Township

NOW: Special Election Day in Jefferson Township

CASS COUNTY, Mich. -- Voter turnout for a special election was off to a slow start in Jefferson Township on Tuesday, with more residents just beginning to show up at the polls as the workday ended.

“It’s been a slow afternoon,” said Jefferson Township Clerk Jennifer Brunner.

The Clerk said some people came in not even knowing there was an election happening today.

The township has 2,265 registered voters, but as of 3 p.m., fewer than 50 ballots had been cast in person. Only 150 absentee ballots were returned ahead of Tuesday’s special election.

“Special elections tend to not see a great turnout,” Brunner noted. “I was a little surprised at how low it’s been. I expected more people, but we’re still hopeful for better turnout by the end of the day.”

Voters will check yes or no on two proposals on the ballot.

Half the township will make the call on a Cassopolis Public Schools Bond Renewal.

While township-wide Emergency Services Millage would add 75 cents per $1,000 of taxable property valuation to fund ambulance services over the next six years, if approved.

The millage is expected to generate around $120,000 in its first year.

Brunner emphasized the significance of local elections. “These special elections may not get as much attention, but they impact vital services like emergency response and education,” she said.

Polls remain open until 8 p.m. Unofficial results can be found here. Stick with ABC57 for results.
