St. Joseph Co. to use FEMA grant to buy homes in flood prone areas

St. Joseph County has released a list of the properties it plans to purchase as part of the county's Voluntary Floodplain Home Buyout Program. The county received a grant from FEMA to purchase the properties.

The St. Joseph County Division of Public Works, County Drainage Board and County Emergency Management Agency received a $2,162,080.49 pre-disaster mitigation grant from FEMA, which will cover 75-percent of the cost. The county will provide $720,693.51 in funding for the project.

The homes along the Phillips and Laing ditches will be purchased, demolished and the property will be returned to open green space.
The properties to be purchased include:

  • 60116 Garnet Road
  • 20359 Jewell
  • 20345 Pearl
  • 20340 Pearl
  • 20320 Pearl
  • 20325 Opal
  • 20315 Opal
  • 20340 Opal
  • 60200 Ruby
  • 20237 Ritter
  • 14684 Ireland
