ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- The St. Joseph County Department of Health released a statement on the U.S. Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe V. Wade.
Education and the ability to inform the community on policy decisions impacting public health is the most important role that the department has, according to healthcare officials.
"The St. Joseph County Department of Health believes that women, their partners and families and medical professionals must maintain the authority to make the judgement surrounding the need for termination of pregnancy under exceptional circumstances to protect the lives of women and prevent an increase in maternal morbidity and mortality,” said the report.
A special assembly of the Indiana legislature will convene on July 25 to discuss possible changes to the state’s current laws on abortion.
Below is the full statement released by the department.
