The St. Joseph County Department of Health rescinded the county health order requiring face coverings in certain circumstances.
Deputy health officer Dr. Mark Fox told ABC57, "we've been trying to fall in lock-step with the CDC,” in its updated guidelines. But he does, “expect numbers to go up somewhat.”
Dr. Fox said cases of COVID-19 in St Joseph County are at their lowest point this year, but only about 38% of St. Joe residents are vaccinated.
“There is some risk here,” Dr. Fox said. "We’re really asking people on the honor system who are not yet fully vaccinated to continue to wear a mask in indoor spaces.”
The health department is asking the county council to rescind its mask order, which fines businesses not requiring masks. The council’s order is set to expire in two weeks.
