State health officials report Indiana’s first case of the Omicron variant

The Indiana Department of Health announced Sunday that it has detected the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in a specimen collected from an unvaccinated Indiana resident.

Health officials collected the specimen on December 9.

The health department did not say where in the state the resident lives and no additional information will be released due to privacy laws.

Health officials continue to encourage Hoosiers to get vaccinated against COVID-19 if eligible and a booster if you are 16 or older.

Information about the Omicron variant will be reported on the COVID-19 dashboard this week, the health department said.
