State Road 23 resurfacing project starts Monday

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -

The Indiana Department of Transportation will begin preliminary work on SR23 on Monday to prepare the road for the resurfacing project, which starts in mid-June.

Preliminary work will begin between Edison Road and Gumwood/Main and will continue through mid-June.

Monday through mid-June, there will be temporary lane closures and traffic restrictions in small sections while crews patch areas of the road and construct curb ramps.

The resurfacing project, which begins in mid-June, will happen in two phases.

Work will be done one lane at a time, leaving one lane in each direction and a turn lane open for travel.

Crews will remove layers of old asphalt and replace it with new asphalt and a surface coating. Then new lines will be painted on the road.

Phase 1:  Edison Road to Cleveland Road (Middle of June through early July)
Phase 2: Cleveland Road to Gumwood Road/Main (Early July through August)

INDOT has been working with local officials to limit the impact to local residents and businesses, including making it a priority to complete the project prior to the start of the school year and the first Notre Dame home football game.

Crews will also contact business owners prior to major work underway in their immediate area, to provide them with information concerning the project.
