Stop your pipes from freezing this winter

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Freezing water lines causes pipes to split.

"When pipes start to freeze and split, It can get into the hundreds and thousands of dollars," says Paul Patillo, a Service Technician at Aaron's Plumbing.

There are some simple steps you can take to stop your pipes from breaking.

"Heat tape which will wrap around a pipe and you can plug it into a wall and it keeps the pipes warm," says Patillo.

A continual water flow will keep your pipes fluid in freezing temperatures.

To prevent any future damage on your pipes this winter season, before the temperatures start dropping even more, you can go to any home improvement store and buy foam insulation for only a couple of dollars.

You can cover the pipes yourself and save hundreds of dollars in repairs.

Covering and powering off your outdoor spigot will save you from repairs come spring.

Patillo says taking the proper winterization steps now can save you from spending a lot later. And all it takes is a quick trip to any home improvement store.
