Structural damage forces emergency closure of Franklin Street Bridge

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- The Franklin Street Bridge in Michigan City has been closed due to structural damage caused by the recent frigid temperatures.

The bridge is expected to reopen to traffic on April 15.

“The emergency nature of this bridge closure is important for our citizens to understand,” said Dr. Vidya Kora, County Commission President. “The recent extreme temperatures with arctic wind chill led to buckling and damage creating a safety hazard for our community. We must address this for public safety and make sure it is done prior to the start of our seasonal traffic.”

The declaration of an emergency repair will allow for funds to be used to pay for the costs of the repair.
