The League of Women Voters Elkhart County hosted a luncheon with the new superintendent of Elkhart Community Schools, Dr. Steve Thalheimer.
Thalheimer spoke about the referendum that would fund education related programs, managing class sizes, school safety initiatives as well as to attract and retain teachers.
The referendum would increase the property taxes of homeowners by $165 a year for the average home (estimated at $106,400 in value) with a homestead deduction, 35-percent supplemental homestead deduction and mortgage deduction.
For homes without exemptions, the monthly tax bill would increase by $448.44 a year.
“The purpose would be with the referendum to be able to ensure that we have the staff that we need. Right now we have positions that are not filled because we don’t have a competitive compensation plan so that people feel that they can come here and really do the work that we need them to do," Superintendent Thalheimer said.
