NOW: Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett set to speak at Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, Amy Coney Barrett, is set to speak at the University of Notre Dame on Sept. 12 at 4 pm in the Leighton Concert Hall of the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center.

The event will include Justice Barrett engaging in a moderated conversation over topics centered around her upcoming book, ‘Listening to the Law’.

The Notre Dame Law School graduate and former law professor's visit was planned before yesterday’s murder of conservative activist, Charlie Kirk.

A protest is also planned at the corner of Notre Dame Avenue for Justice Barrett’s trip, organizers said they’re speaking out against some of Justice Barrett’s rulings.

In light of Wednesday’s shooting, ABC57 attempted to speak with Notre Dame, students, and local and state law enforcement on how they’re preparing for tomorrow’s event.

We also reached out to the organization planning the protest, Michiana Alliance for Democracy, who provided the following statement:

“The Michiana Alliance for Democracy’s peaceful protest planned for Friday in response to Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s visit to Notre Dame is still scheduled to proceed as planned. We are, of course, deeply saddened by the tragic events at Utah Valley University and extend our condolences to everyone affected. We recognize the heightened sensitivity around public demonstrations in light of such incidents, and we want to be clear that our protest is—and always has been—peaceful in nature. Our message is grounded in the principles of democracy, civil discourse, and nonviolent expression. We are organizing this protest to draw attention to serious concerns regarding Justice Barrett’s judicial record, particularly on issues that directly impact marginalized communities and democratic institutions.”
