Suspect details revealed in Laurel Woods Apartments SWAT standoff

Caleb Ringer

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The St. Joseph County Police Department has released more details regarding the suspect's background and events of Monday's SWAT standoff at Laurel Woods Apartments.

SJCPD's Warrants Team responded to the 600 block of Laurel Woods Court after receiving information that wanted individual Caleb Ringer may be inside an apartment.

Ringer was wanted out of Elkhart County for violating probation for the charges of Intimidation, Theft, Strangulation, Battery Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, Criminal Confinement with Bodily Injury, Resisting Law Enforcement, and Domestic Battery.

Ringer also had multiple serious charges out of Michigan for Parole Violation, Assault Causing Great Bodily Harm, Kidnapping, Domestic Violence, and Home Invasion.

After obtaining a search warrant, officers, assisted by the US Marshals Task Force, announced their presence and entered the apartment.

Police say a K9 was deployed, confirming someone was inside.

The report states at that point, Ringer barricaded himself in a bathroom, shouting he was armed and threatening to harm any officer who approached.

The SJCPD team then exited and requested the South Bend Police Department SWAT Team, since the situation was in their jurisdiction.

SWAT negotiators arrived confirmed two people were inside.

Police say after hours of negotiations, distraction devices were deployed, and both subjects were taken into custody.

Ringer was taken to Memorial Hospital for evaluation.

Ringer will be booked into the St. Joseph County Jail on his outstanding warrants after being released from the hospital.

Authorities say a consent search of the apartment revealed no firearms.
