Suspect in custody after deadly Elkhart shooting

ELKHART, Ind., --- A male suspect is behind bars after a deadly shooting in Elkhart early Saturday morning.

Authorities were called to the 2300 block of W. Lexington Ave. in Elkhart after gunshots were heard around 5:16 a.m.

When police arrived, they found a male victim, 37-year-old Thomas Ray Johnson of Elkhart, lying on the floor suffering from apparent gunshot wound(s).

Johnson was taken to the hospital where he later died.

Through an investigation, investigators developed a potential male suspect who allegedly traveled from the scene to an apartment complex in Goshen.

The suspect identified as 23-year-old Ja Liahs Michael Curry of Goshen refused to exit. 

After the SWAT Team was activated, Curry exited and was arrested and booked into the Elkhart County Jail on preliminary suspicion of Murder.

The Elkhart County Homicide Unit is handling the investigation.
