SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- South Bend Police Department says its Violent Crimes Unit took over the investigation into Monday night's domestic disturbance and shots fired case near Indiana University South Bend.

On Tuesday, South Bend Police Department said the suspect is in custody and there is no active threat.

On Monday night, just after 8 pm, South Bend police responded to the 1000 block of S 23rd St for the report of a domestic disturbance. Police were told that someone reportedly discharged a firearm, then got into a vehicle.

Shortly after that, the vehicle reportedly crashed in the near Northside Boulevard and Clover Street.

Witnesses told police the driver got out of the vehicle, fired more shots, then ran away.

Multiple officers were looking for the suspect, using drones and a K9.

Because this happened about a half mile from IUSB, the campus issued a shelter-in-place order, which was lifted a couple hours later.

ABC57 was given a statement from the IU Police Department that says in part quote:

"On September 22, 2025, the IU police Department assisted the South Bend Police Department in responding to an armed domestic dispute near the IU South Bend campus. IU notification alerts were sent to the IU South Bend campus to shelter in place while the incident was ongoing.”

Police said as of 11:30 pm Monday no injuries from gunfire were reported.
