Suspected mass killer James Holmes to make first court appearance

AURORA, Colo. – Suspected mass killer James Holmes is expected to make his first appearance in a Colorado court.

Police say Holmes is responsible for killing 12 and injuring nearly 60 people after opening fire during a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises last Friday.

Sunday, President Obama offered words of hope, to the Colorado community left shaken by this mass shooting.

"I think the reason stories like this have such an impact on us is because we can all understand what it would be to have somebody that we love taken from us in this fashion."

ABC News is reporting Holmes will make a brief court appearance Monday and he's not expected to enter a plea.

The 24-year-old was a neuroscience student earning his PHD at the University of Colorado Denver.

At his apartment Saturday, Police found hazardous material and a Batman poster.

It was also reported that Holmes applied to a gun club in Denver, but he was denied access and within the last 60 days he bought four guns and 6,000 rounds of ammo.

One gun shop owner who saw him told his staff he looked suspicious and they should not sell guns to him.
