Suspects flee Bendrix Drive hit and run on foot

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- In the early hours of March 7 two vehicles collided at the intersection of Bendix Drive and Huron Street in South Bend. Passengers of one of the vehicles fled on foot before police arrived, leaving behind two people who were seriously injured.

Authorities say that at around 1:06 a.m. on Thursday, officers were dispatched to the scene.

Reports say that a vehicle driven by 24-year-old Queen Leola Ward, of Niles, was going south on Bendix, ran through a stop sign, and crashed into a vehicle going west on Huron Street before hitting a parked car.

The vehicle Ward hit was being driven by 31-year-old Levi Mitchell Welch, of South Bend.

"When officers arrived, an unknown number of occupants of the westbound vehicle had fled the scene on foot," police said. "Ms. Ward was severely injured in the crash, as was a passenger of the second vehicle who remained trapped. The St. Joseph County Fatal Crash Team (FACT) was then activated, per protocol."

The crash is still being investigated by FACT, but if any members of the public have any information regarding the suspect vehicle, contact Captain Tim Spencer at 574-235-7818 extension 7112.
