SVU announces arrest in home invasion, attempted rape

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A man has been arrested in the home invasion and attempted rape that happened Wednesday morning at a home in the 500 block of S. 27th Street.

The arrest was announced at a press conference at the Special Victims Unit Friday afternoon.

Joshua Heath Black, 29, is facing charges of burglary of a dwelling, strangulation, attempted rape, and sexual battery.

Black was arrested in Osceola Friday by South Bend Police.

Police said Black entered the victim's home through an unlocked front door and woke the victim by assaulting her.

When she saw his gun, she somehow got it away from him and pointed it at him, police said.

The man fled the scene and she called police.

The victim has fully cooperated with the investigation, police said.

She suffered several injuries when he attempted to strangle her, police said.

Black is scheduled to be in court on January 7.

Prosecutor Ken Cotter thanked the community for all the tips in this case, which were instrumental in identifying the suspect.
