Swarm of mayflies coat areas by St. Joseph River in Elkhart

A bizarre and ‘biblical’ sight happened by the St. Joseph River in Elkhart Friday morning.

Our partners at the Elkhart Truth report a swarm of mayflies came together on both sides of the river today.

The biggest swarm was seen at a 7-Eleven gas station on Main Street.

The insects coated everything in the area, especially any bright light.

A retired professor from Goshen College told the Truth that mayflies spend most of their lives underwater but emerge during their adult stage in huge numbers.

The bugs are not harmful to humans.
