Teen convicted in Grace Ross' murder to remain in juvenile facility for now

Anthony Hutchens

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- Eighteen-year-old Anthony Hutchens will remain in juvenile detention until at least October 2026 for the murder of 6-year-old Grace Ross.

Hutchens appeared in court Friday morning to evaluate whether he should spend the remainder of his 64-year sentence in an adult correctional facility. The court determined that he will be returned to Pendleton Juvenile Correctional Facility for at least one year.

The court will then reevaluate the transfer of Hutchens, who will then be 19, to an adult prison. According to Hutchens' defense attorney at the time of his sentencing, he could be held at a juvenile facility up until the age of 21.

Hutchens was convicted and sentenced in March 2023 for the murder and molestation of Grace Ross in New Carlisle.

Ross' mother and grandmother had asked for the maximum adult prison sentence for the crimes committed by then-14-year-old Hutchens in 2021.

Hutchens went through around 20 hours of psychological evaluations after the crimes. According to reports, Hutchens told detectives that a 'shadowy figure' took control of his body and put his hands on Ross' neck.

When he 'woke up,' Ross was already dead. The six-year-old was found partially naked in the woods by police.
