The City of Benton Harbor hosted their official rededication ceremony at the Benton Harbor Public Library

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. ---- The library has always been a place of information, but now it tells a story of 4th District Berrien County Commissioner, Maime L Yarbrough

The City of Benton Harbor hosted their official rededication ceremony at the Benton Harbor Public Library, in honor of renaming the library after Yarbrough.

Yarbrough is known as a woman of many hats. She's community activist and longtime library board member, including a decade as board president. Yarbrough said she devotes her time to the library the most out of everything she's a part of.

"I've been involved in a lot of things, and when I have to choose where I want to serve and put my time, I'd pick the library." Yarbrough said.

Through Yarbough's years of service, she's helped create new learning programs and improved technology for the library. Every effort has helped make the library more accessible to the community

Library Clerk Matthew Rappette has worked alongside Yarbough on the board for many years. He says that she's been an advocate for library improvements.

"All the different materials available, that's what it's all about. That's all about her," Rappette said. "We're very excited, and I'm very excited. I thought it was very proper and exciting that they put her name on the library."

Yarbrough's recognition means more to her than just a new sign on the library. She wants to inspire the community to keep advocating.

"The fact that I'm a woman, the fact that I'm Black. And that's when your parents and teachers can tell you, you can be anything you want." Yarbrough said.

The library is currently planning to modernize its building, which will include elevator improvements.
