Three dogs injured in Elkhart house fire

ELKHART, Ind. - Three dogs were injured in a house fire in Elkhart Sunday morning, according to the Elkhart City Fire Department.

At 11:15 a.m., firefighters responded to the 1600 block of Roys Ave. for the incident.

When firefighters got to the scene, they were met with heavy smoke and fire coming from the back of the house.

The fire was under control by 11:30 a.m.

Initial reports said there might be occupants inside the home but during the search, no people were found.

Firefighters did find three dogs, who were revived and released to the Humane Society.

The home's occupants had left before the fire started and returned shortly after flames were put out.

Firefighters found no working smoke detectors in the house.

They believe the cause of the fire was accidental based on information they have at this time.
