Three juveniles accused of leading chase in Elkhart
ELKHART, Ind. – Three juveniles were arrested after allegedly leading police on a chase Monday morning, the Elkhart Police Department reported.
At 1:24 a.m., an officer was at the Highland Mobile Home Park for a report of a suspicious vehicle.
According to the report, the vehicle was driving slowly through the area and three unknown people were seen getting out and checking the doors to other vehicles.
The three people were not found at the original address so the officer drove to the Maple Lane Apartments.
On South Scarlet Maple, the officer noticed three people who saw the officer and began walking away from the vehicles.
The officer exited his fully marked vehicle and yelled for them to stop.
He then began to chase after them.
He lost sight of the three but eventually saw what he believed to be the accused suspect vehicle, a tan-colored GMC Yukon, leaving the area.
A second officer caught up to the suspect vehicle near Osolo Road and C.R. 6 and turned on his emergency lights.
The vehicle allegedly didn’t stop and continued a pursuit into Michigan until it became disabled east of the roundabout on U.S. 12 near Old 205.
Dispatch told officers the vehicle was reported stolen out of Portage, Michigan.
All three of the vehicle’s occupants were taken into custody.
Two of the occupants were 14 years old and one was 16 years old.
They were released to Cass County.
A resisting law enforcement report was taken.
An officer returned to the area of the original report and spoke with the owner of a vehicle whose door was open. Nothing was reported missing but a report for unauthorized entry to motor vehicle was taken.
This is an ongoing investigation.
