Three people killed in Elkhart County crash Thursday afternoon

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- Three people are dead following a crash on S.R. 15, south of C.R. 146 on Thursday afternoon.

The Elkhart County Sheriff's Office says the call came in around 3:02 p.m. of a crash between a 2009 Dodge Journey heading south on S.R. 15 and a semi-truck driving north.

According to police, the Dodge abruptly turned left, crossing the center line, into the northbound lane, directly in front of the truck, causing the collision. The Dodge's passenger side collided with the front of the semi-truck and two occupants were ejected.

The other passenger of the Dodge was trapped in the vehicle. All three occupants of the Dodge were pronounced dead at the scene.

Their names have not been released but they were 32, 28, and 24 years old.

The driver of the semi was not injured, neither was the driver of a third vehicle, a 2017 Chrysler Pacifica, that was also traveling south on S.R. 15, directly behind the Dodge. That vehicle received minor front-end damage.
