Three separate shootings make for a violent weekend across Michiana
GOSHEN, Ind. --- It was a violent weekend across Michiana, with shootings in Goshen, South Bend, and Benton Harbor. Two people are dead, and at least five others are hurt following all three incidents.
Residents in Goshen are still dealing with the initial shock that such violent crime happened in their own neighborhood.
"This doesn’t happen," says a nearby neighbor to the Goshen shooting. "I’ve lived here almost my whole life and this is like the first time that I’ve seen something like this happen here. So, it’s really just shocking and surprising here.”
Another resident says that he worries people are beginning to become desensitized to these types of shootings, since they are happening across the country.
“I guess with so many mass shootings going on we’re kind of desensitized, and we kind of have to not be like that." says another Goshen resident. "Especially in a small town, it’s unheard of.”
One day after the tragic shooting, Goshen Mayor Jeremy Stutsman says, "I am greatly concerned with this shooting. I have been in contact with the family through their chosen representative. I am also in contact with the prosecutor's office and of course, Goshen Police Department. We will be having a press conference to speak to the community tomorrow. My thoughts and prayers are with the family and all involved in this horrific crime."
Goshen residents hope that officials are able to address the gun violence and prevent it from becoming a trend in the area.
“I mean, either stronger laws," suggests a Goshen resident. "I know a lot of people aren’t okay with it and it’s an amendment right, but times have changed and we just need to adapt and do things better.”
Goshen city leaders are planning a press conference for Monday evening.
