Tips to drive safely around snow plows

SOUTH BEND, Ind.—The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has released tips on how to drive safely around snow plows.

Snow plows only travel at speeds up to 35 mph so it is important to maintain a safe, slow distance to avoid rear-ending them.

Traveling at a safe distance also helps avoid reduced visibility caused by snow clouds created by the plow.

When passing a plow, it is safest to do so on the left-hand-side as plowed snow is typically pushed off to the right-hand-side.

That said, the safest place to drive is behind the plow as plow drivers have limited peripheral vision, making it dangerous to linger beside them.

When in doubt, always remember INDOT’s phrase, “Don’t Crowd the Plow”.
